We are delighted to welcome Fazenda Tres Meninas to our network of producer partners through the Taf Direct Relationship program. The farm is located in Monte Carmelo, a region with a long-standing coffee-growing tradition in Cerrado, Brazil. Tres Meninas and taf share common values that lie at the heart of their identity and guide the way they operate. Values such as quality, sustainable management, innovation, transparency, and consistency are driving forces for both Fazenda Tres Meninas and taf. Paula and Marcelo, owners and equal managers of the farm, believe that as producers they have a responsibility to society to leave behind a better legacy in terms of environmental and social benefits, extending far beyond the gates of their farm. This sense of responsibility also reaches their daughters, whom they wish to educate with the same examples and values. By dedicating special care to the soil through the use of science and the best available technologies, Paula and Marcelo have been pioneers in applying regenerative coffee farming across their entire property in the Cerrado region since 2016. Furthermore, the data, techniques, and results they have gathered over the years are shared with universities and other interested producers. Now, Tres Meninas is taking another step forward by adopting a conservation management model. By becoming less dependent on chemicals, they now focus on maintaining the system’s natural balance, which has led them to become organic. Although this was not their initial goal, the balance achieved in the ecosystem means that the coffee plants no longer require significant chemical protection. According to Imaflora’s 2019 report, Tres Meninas is now carbon negative and part of the top 5% most sustainable coffees in the world, sequestering approximately 5.5 tons of CO₂ per hectare. As part of their soil care, the farm practices covered soil cultivation, maintaining plant species that serve as natural fertilizers and nourishment for the soil. These plants are not necessarily harvested but act as organic food for the land, dramatically improving its composition. In addition, they use agroecological tree corridors, different tree species planted among the coffee plants that attract the natural predators of coffee pests, improve biodiversity, and create an optimal microclimate to help mitigate climate challenges. The farm is energy self-sufficient, producing its own energy needs, and it also manages its water resources by preserving and reusing rainwater, a practice that benefits not only the farm but also the roughly 7,000 inhabitants of the surrounding area. Finally, the farm hosts bee colonies that enhance pollination productivity, support biodiversity, and serve as the best indicator of a healthy microenvironment. The vision of Tres Meninas is based on the balanced functioning of the entire ecosystem and the human system that surrounds it, brought to life through good practices and deep respect for the environment. Fazenda Tres Meninas holds Rainforest Alliance, Regenerative (the first in Brazil to be both regenerative and organic), and Organic Brazil certifications (with European certification expected from the 2024 harvest), along with numerous awards recognizing both their coffee and their sustainable practices.
